Art students should learn more than how to throw a pot, paint a picture or weave a rug. The ability to look at a work of art and understand what it is about is a skill that they will use all their lives, but too often this skill is overlooked and deemed unnecessary. My middle school students spend part of each art class learning the four steps of art criticism; describing, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating. I use Voicethread to teach the process. In the example I have provided, the students are "describing" what they see in the detail-rich painting by Bruegel called "The Fight Between Carnival and Lent."
